    Abstract

Background: Abortion is one of the leading causes of maternal morbidity and mortality, particularly among developing nations of the world. An estimated 40-50 million abortion cases are reported every year. Although safe termination of pregnancy in the second trimester is a burgeoning emerging practice, little evidence is underpinned ascribed to explicit documentation of outcomes. This study has aimed at assessing the outcomes of second trimester abortion at St Paul Hospital and Millennium Medical College.

Methods: A cross sectional study was employed to review two years period from January1, 2018-Dec30, 2019 at St Paul Hospital and Millennium Medical College. .A structured questionnaire was used to collect   socio-demographic data, clinical characteristics and acute complications. The sample size was calculated using single population proportion formula with 33% prevalence of second trimester abortion in a study done in Amhara region referral Hospitals in 2014 and sample size was 340.Data was entered and analyzed using IBM SPSS Statistics, version23.0.

Results: A total of 340 client charts were reviewed. The prevalence of second trimester was 42.9%. Among reviewed charts more than two third (222) (65.7%) were age group of less than or equal to 24yrs. More than half 200(58.8%) were with first pregnancy and 239(70.3%) were nuliparus. Of which 40.6% were induced and 2.3% spontaneous. Medical termination accounts 285(85%) over surgical way. Complication rate is 10%% and family planning uptake 91.2% with the most common being implants accounting 52.9% followed by injectable 22.1%.

Conclusion: Induced second trimester abortion is high despite the availability of first trimester services. Most of the individuals are adolescent and urban area residency. Medical abortion being the commonest preferred abortion methods and contraception utilization rate is high.
