dc.description.abstract<p><strong>Background</strong></p> <p>Ectopic pregnancy&nbsp;has remained a significant cause of maternal morbidity and mortality especially in the sub Saharan Africa. Ectopic pregnancy is the commonest cause of maternal morbidity and mortality in the first trimester of pregnancy. A periodic appraisal of its incidence and association is paramount .the incidence and association of ectopic pregnancy is not well studied in sub-Saharan Africa and as well as in Ethiopia.</p> <p><strong>Objectives</strong></p> <p>The objective of the study is to determine risk factors and describe socio-demographic, clinical characteristics of ectopic pregnancy in Saint Paul hospital millennium medical college Addis Ababa Ethiopia.</p> <p><strong>Material and Method</strong></p> <p>A prospective case control study between February 1, 2015 and January 31 2016.</p> <p><strong>Results</strong></p> <p>The incidence of ectopic pregnancy in our study was 1 per 90 live births. The association of ectopic pregnancy showed higher odds ratio with early initiation of sexual intercourse less than 18Yrs in the ectopic cases compared to the control group with{(OR=5.33, 95% CI 3.168-8.971,p value of&lt;0.001)}. The association of life time sexual partners &gt;2 has a positive association with {(OR=3.03 with P value of= 0.031)}. There was a statically insignificant positive correlation between uses of emergency levonorgestrol contraceptive among the ectopic cases compared to the controls with (OR=1.568 with 95 % CI 0.681-2.857 with p value=0.259).</p> <p><strong>Conclusion</strong></p> The incidence of ectopic pregnancy in this study was much higher than a retrospective study done thirty years back. The study also showed maternal morbidity and Near miss cases is high in ectopic pregnancy.en_US
