| dc.description.abstract | <p><strong>Background: </strong> Medical methods for induced abortion have emerged over the past two decades as safe, effective, and feasible alternatives to surgery. Approximately 205 million pregnancies occur each year worldwide. Over a third are unintended and about a fifth end in induced abortion. Although the efficacy of mifeprostone and misoprostole is studied well in the developed countries, very little is known about the situation in the developing countries including Ethiopia.<strong> </strong>Considering the lack of information on the efficacy of mifeprostone and misoprostole in our setting hopefully will help us bridge the existing information gap on the subject matter.</p>
<p><strong>Objective of the study</strong><strong>: </strong>The objective of the study is to determine the effectiveness of mifepristone and Misoprostol in second trimester termination of pregnancy among women who come for abortion service in SPHMMC from October 15, 2017 to January 15, 2018.</p>
<p><strong>Method</strong>: A facility based descriptive cross sectional study was conducted. A structured questionnaire was used to collect the sociodemographic characteristics, clinical profile, and a standard 400mcg misoprostol dosage for gestational age of 13 to 24weeks of gestational age and 100mcg for gestational age of 24 to 27+6 weeks of gestation given intravaginally every 3 hours until a maximum of 10 doses in a 48h period with a rest of about 12hrs after the first 5 doses.The success and failure rate of the treatment was analyzed, the elapsed time until expulsion of the fetus and placenta, the related complication of the treatment. Data was entered and analyzed using SPSS statistical package version 17. Results are presented with tables and graphs.</p>
<p><strong>Results: </strong>In this study all 120 patients had given Mifeprostone followed by Misoprostole. Majority of the study population were Oromo in ethnicity accounting for 41.7%, followed by Amara (30.8%), Gurage (18.3%).About 98 (81.7%) cases have expelled the abortus with in24 hrs.By the end of the 48hrs 111 (92.5%) of the cases have expelled it.<br><br><strong>Conclusion:</strong> mifeprostone and misoprostole combination use in second trimester termination of pregnancy is safe, effective and with short interval of abortion and high evacuation rate of products of conception and less complications.</p> | en_US |
